In Norse myth the norns are female beings who decide a child's destiny at birth, much like the Moirai of Greek legend. They live beneath the roots of Yggdrasill, the tree of destiny. Every day they water the roots from the Well of Urðr and carve into them the fate of each person.

The formula follows the main rules of classic perfumery. It opens with bergamot, mandarin, mango and orange, then moves into rich, intense notes of black peppercorns, cinnamon, clove buds, geranium and water lily. Liquorice and oriental spices come last, along with a few ingredients the makers keep secret. The scent in the room changes over time, and one fresh spray takes you back through it again, from the first note to the last.

The recipe is based on old customs and on the belief that every plant and scent has its own magical purpose. It works like a witch's recipe, where each ingredient has both an aromatherapy role and a magical one. The notes support one another and sit together in a balanced fragrance pyramid. Bergamot: considered one of the most effective essential oils against unwanted spiritual and psychological states. It is known to lift the mood and relax at the same time. It calms, revives and helps against tiredness and stress. A bride's bouquet scented with bergamot oil is said to bring a successful marriage.

Mandarin and orange: both oils are said to open the heart and free you from sadness, nervousness and anxiety. Some people find them relaxing, others energising, and they keep melancholy away. They support optimism, natural charm and self-confidence, restore the aura after serious illness or emotional stress and are recommended when you need spiritual warmth. In magic both are linked above all with attracting love.

Mango: one of the oldest plants cultivated by people, and every part of it is used, from the wood to mango butter that softens skin. Its leaves decorate temples and its fruit is offered to the gods. Southern peoples used the fragrant fruit and wood in love magic, to reveal a person's talents and abilities and to protect against negative energy.

Black peppercorns: the scent is said to ease pain, improve blood circulation and warm aching muscles and joints. Cinnamon is said to warm and strengthen the aura and support optimism, integrity, belief in your own strength and self-esteem. It helps you let go of self-pity and an unlucky past, and lets a personality shine.

Clove buds: the scent spreads warmth, harmony, security and calm. Water lily: the Latin name of the water lily family, Nymphaeaceae, comes from the Greek nymphs of lakes, rivers and streams, so water lilies are thought to hold a lot of water and moon energy. They stand for calm, purity, spiritual light and modesty. The scent helps to resist earthly desires and soothes the soul. In rituals it strengthens imagination and the ability to picture your goals.

Liquorice: Chinese medicine has used it for several thousand years against many complaints, from ulcers and constipation to nausea. Remains of liquorice root were found in pharaohs' tombs among other treasures, which shows how highly the plant was valued. Since ancient times it has been added to incense for a scent believed to support youth, sexuality, charm and physical health.
